Engineering atomic-scale magnetic fields by dysprosium single atom magnets

Abstract Atomic scale engineering of magnetic fields is a key ingredient for miniaturizing quantum devices and precision control systems. This requires unique combination stability spin-manipulation capabilities. Surface-supported single atom magnets offer such possibilities, where long temporal thermal the states can be achieved by maximizing magnet/ic anisotropy energy (MAE) minimizing tunnelling magnetization. Here, we show that dysprosium (Dy) atoms on magnesium oxide (MgO) have giant MAE 250 meV, currently highest among all surface spins. Using variety scanning microscopy (STM) techniques including electron spin resonance (ESR), confirm no spontaneous spin-switching in Dy over days at ? 1 K under low even vanishing field. We utilize these robust to engineer nanostructures, demonstrating with atomic tunability.
